Mayflower Marina Case Study

Mayflower Marina is one of the leading marinas in the South West of England. The marina has 400 berths and prides itself on its modern facilities and excellent customer service.

Having invested significantly in the marinas infrastructure and facilities over recent years, the management of Mayflower Marina, Sailport PLC, wanted to ensure that that the marina was properly represented on the Internet in order to drive berth occupancy by both resident and non-resident vessels.

The Challenge:

The challenge for Beechwood was to create a new website that would generate more resident and visitor berthing enquiries and to expand geographical reach to potential new boat owners.

Most of the Mayflower Marinas marketing had previously centered on attendance at UK boat shows, newsletters and by the publication of a handbook. Although the marina had a website, the design reflected the printed handbook.

The Solution:

The solution was to launch a new website focused on marketing the marina to potential berth holders and visiting boat owners.

The secondary, but no less important function, was to keep current customers up to date with developments, news and events occurring at the marina.

The aim was to create a high quality, cost effective website that would reflect the range and standard of facilities in the marina and to enhance it's appeal to potential customers.

The site was designed to be more informative, more up-to-date, to promote local and national boating events, regattas, as well as major events in the city.

The site was key-worded to help achieve 'page 1' Google search rankings for berths, marina berths, permanent berthing, visitor berthing and contract berthing in Plymouth and the South West.

The website was created and designed in 2008.

Key revenue areas targeted:

Permanent berth holders
Visitor berths
Boat yard services

The simple aim was to get the berthing and facilities information in front of potential berth holders in an efficient ongoing cost effective way.

Success

The new site is a big success and has enabled the Marina to get its commercial assets on Google page 1 rankings.

In particular, the site quickly achieved top page one rankings for permanent berthing and visitor berths in the South West.

The number of berthing enquiries has increased significantly and the quality of the web enquiries is significantly better and, because applicants are better informed about the marinas facilities, the enquiry conversion rate has doubled.

The information on the site is kept up-to-date which has reduced the need to send out costly printed materials.

Features of the website:

CMS News & Events system
Dynamic targeted enquiry forms
E-mail management system
Actively managed
